House of the week: Lakeside living

What is it?

Ballafada is a three bedroom bungalow located in the stunning surrounds of Ballyconneely, Co. Galway

The Spec

This architecturally designed residence is set on a private 2 acre site, near to numerous beaches including the impressive blue flag Coral Strand. The west facing house is approached through twin electric gates and down a long private driveway through the extensive surrounding grounds. The interior is made up of a main living room with sitting area, atrium and study. This space features a double volume vaulted roof with exposed ceiling beams and yet is dominated by the statement stone fireplace. The dining room with black Connemara slate floor tiles is located off the kitchen which has polished walnut units and houses a circular island unit. The large hallway leads up to three bedrooms, one of which has an ensuite shower room. The thermal suite is a state of the art addition to this luxurious home.

Why we love it?

Location, view, build, interior... Whats not to love about this bungalow! This superb stone build takes the bungalows of the area to a new modern level. Each room has been tastefully furnished along with keeping a fairly neutral palette throughout and we think this keeps the space bright and airy while enhancing that view even more. We adore the living space, the open plan space has been delicately divided and the feature chimney breast cleverly conceals another room in the centre. Another reason to heart this house are those tiles, they are locally sourced and provide a textural element that ties the kitchen and dining space together.

Steal the style…

Achieve a subtle yet sophisticated look in your own guest bedroom. Paint the feature wall a warm neutral like this creamy stone colour and keep the other walls a simple cream tone. Bedding can inject any tone you wish into a space and here a black bedspread paired with cushions gives the room a refined take on the monochrome colour scheme. Use a roman blind to make the most of the natural light without compromising privacy and keep it neutral to help blend in with the rest of the room. Layout the room with the bed centred and place a lamp on each bedside table. Consider installing recessed spot lights as the main task lighting in the room as this can help to keep the look modern, while a dimmer switch can instantly transform the feel of a room.
