Irish Designers' Success Abroad

By Sarah O’Hegarty 26-08-2010

Ireland is exporting some of its most talented designers, but at least we can take heart in seeing them prosper across the pond.

Tipperary native Tim Ryan’s unique, sculptural styles have fast become cult favourites among the fashion elite, and his aspirational designs regularly appear on the pages of UK and Italian Vogue, ID and Grazia. Both ethically and environmentally sound, Tim’s designs are made from the finest quality cashmere, lace and silk with his style signature being the unique hand stitched fringing. Stocked at renowned boutique Browns on South Molton Street, London.  Irish stockists: Elaine Curtis, Carlow; Les Jumelles, Galway; Samui, Cork and Bow, Powerscourt Centre, Dublin.

Irish-raised Victoria Rothschild is one half of the design duo rothschild&bickers, specialising in lighting. With clear references to architectural form and detail, these elegant pieces are progressive yet subtle. All the pieces are hand-blown using traditional glass techniques but given a funky twist with fringing and tassels along the rim. Order online at www.rothschildbickers.com

Orla Kiely's homeware designs

Dubliner Orla Kiely’s distinct stem design has become globally recognisable in the past 20 years. Her design empire now encompasses seasonal womenswear, accessories and now a homewares collection. The brand’s original yet nostalgic patterns bring a sense of retro to modern homes and are available exclusively in Ireland at Liz la Cumber Interiors, Coolmine, Dublin 15. www.orlakiely.com

Cork-born upholsterer Aiveen Daly’s witty designs include made-to-order furniture and customised vintage pieces, mirrors and hand-pleated lampshades. The collection ranges from the saucy velvet Spank boudoir chair with corset detailing, to the elegant Puff bedroom chair in grey silk, inspired by a gentleman’s ruffled shirt. Aiveen’s sumptuous style seamlessly blends humour, romance and femininity in designs possessing seductive curves and a glamourous glossy finish.
