How to make a blackboard door

We prefer the utilitarian charm of the blackboard to dry-wipe whiteboards anyday. Now that blackboard paint is readily available here, you can make just about any smooth surface into a chalkboard for important household reminders or to give the kids the thrill of scribbling all over things they normally couldn’t! Here are three easy steps for transforming the back of a kitchen, bedroom or utility room door into a chalkboard.

  1. Sand the door first if the surface is rough, starting with a rougher grade and moving to a finer sanding to finish off. Clean the surface thoroughly. Use good adhesive masking tape to cover the sides of the doors, or to make a frame for your blackboard. Push it down firmly, as you don’t want any of the runny spray paint spreading into gaps.
  2. Add a primer if the door is bare wood or porous. Allow this to dry thoroughly.
  3. Using a can of chalkboard spray paint (available from all major DIY warehouses) follow the instructions on the can, measuring the correct distance between the door and the nozzle to ensure an even coating. It helps to have a clean paintbrush to hand in case any patches spray on too thickly. You might need a few coats to get a good finish, but wait a full day between re-coats.
