Lucina Lennon restores a damaged sideboard

Lucina Lennon finds inspiration in everyday objects and has merged her love of interiors and restoration to bring old, unwanted pieces of furniture back to life, such as this gorgeous, brightly coloured sideboard...

I bought the retro style sideboard in a charity shop for only €45 as it was slightly damaged. I’m working with a lot of hot colours at the moment and this children’s basket (pictured) inspired the colour scheme combination. I brought the basket along with me to MRCB in Christchurch and matched it to Colourtrend paint in Sarah’s Garden for the blue, Lava Lamp for the orange, Cancan for the pink and Fresh Take for the purple, all in the soft sheen finish.

Before I started painting, I drew the chest to scale, probably out of habit from being an architect. I find it’s best to draw it out first, that way I can experiment with the designs and shapes. After planning the design, the pattern was painted on free-hand except for the structured circular shapes where I used the paint lids as a template. I’ve noticed that prices seem to be going up in charity shops, which is great for the charity but there are definitely other bargains to be found out there for the buyer. Especially if you’re not afraid to buy something that needs to be repaired.

More on this project:

The paint on the wall is Colortrends’s 0657 Kyoto interior matt. The blue vase cost €15 and is from Gallerie Lisette.

Lucina and her mum Aida Lennon can show you how to re-invent furniture at special workshops in their store - Galerie Lisette, in Enniskerry, Co Wicklow.
