Anthony Abbott-King's urban retreat

By Jimmy Loughran 19-01-2011

Town planner Anthony Abbott-King has a deep seated appreciation of urban living that colours and enhances his experience of living in a south facing, dual aspect apartment in the heart of Dublin city. His refined tastes and keen sense of light and space have served him well in creating a home that oozes with the luxurious comfort of a high end boutique hotel.

Hall:

An unobtrusive glass table is the perfect complement to this vibrant painting.

Living room:

Tall ceilings are unusual in any apartment, not to mention a city centre home. Anthony has been extremely lucky in finding this spacious home, that has all of the advantages of a bijou home in the heart of the capital without feeling cramped.

An art collection that has been lovingly accumulated slowly and steadily has proved to be a rather beautiful investment. An interesting and unusual mix of work, it has all been hung to optimise the individual personality of each piece and show them all off in style. Careful placement of every painting makes it easy to appreciate their unique and distinct beauty.

Study:

Being an avid reader means that Anthony’s apartment is chock –a-block with books, which are arranged in a very neat and organised fashion according to subject. Accompanied by casually placed pieces of art, they create an air of haute culture in the apartment.

Throughout the apartment is a balance of colours drawn from a very rich and elegant pallette. The smouldering woods of the vintage furniture are set off nicely by the various moods conjured up in Anthony’s paintings, and other pieces such as this shapely blue chair, have an almost sculptural quality that is enhanced by the strong, refined colour.

Kitchen:

This vibrant painting adds a blast of colour to the kitchen and gives it a very distinctive personality. The buzz of the oranges and greens is a lively complement to the deeper shades in the kitchen fittings and lifts the overall mood.

Bedroom:

The warmth of the colour scheme lends itself well to creating a cosy and comfortable atmosphere in the bedroom. A select and neatly-sized assortment of accessories ensures that the space doesn’t feel crowded or cluttered; a psychedelic miniature piece of art and some thin reading lamps bring light relief without being in your face.

Anthony’s apartment is finely and furnished with an enviable art collection and some choice pieces of vintage furniture. A patient nature and a discerning eye mean that his collections of both have built up over time, and all sits side by side, comfortably accompanying one another in style rather than being too matchy-matchy.

Tell us what you think:

Anthony loves living in an apartment, saying:

People don’t value the benefit of apartments – they’re effectively small bungalows in the sky enjoying great locations - in my case ten minutes from O’Connell Street.
