Modern family home on the Dublin Mountains

By Jimmy Loughran 26-01-2011

Feast your eyes on this modern three storey house at the foothills of the Dublin Mountains, where the owner, Suzanne has created an elegant and unique interior using a palette of coffee and taupe with accents of cream throughout.

Hall:

Suzanne’s hands on approach to interior design led her to design the hall table which was made by one of her favourite companies, Fassbinder English in Dun Laoghaire. The company has been responsible for much of the custom made furniture in the house. “I just give them the brief and they always come up trumps”, says Suzanne. A trade show provided the horse bronze and the double lamp is from Minnie Peters, also in Dun Laoghaire.

Living room:

The fireplace Suzanne designed herself with Jim from Dun Laoghaire Fireplaces and features flat as opposed to polished marble which was shipped in from Spain. Above the mantle hangs a charcoal of a horses head, by artist Paddy Lennon. Suzanne’s whole family share the love of all things equestrian and her second brother already had some of Paddy’s work which Suzanne had long admired. Decorating the lounge gave her the perfect excuse to contact the artist to purchase her own piece.

Den:

A painting, entitled ‘The Vortex’ by artist Don Knox dominates the Den, occupying a wall where originally there were double doors to the lounge.

Kitchen:

The kitchen units are the original units which came with the house when they bought it two and a half years ago. This kitchen includes an island which is moveable – handy when it comes to entertaining. Floor tiles are by Tilestyle, Dublin.

Bedrooms:

The velvet headboard in the Master Bedroom, shimmers in brown, aubergine and gold and was made by Kari Curtains in Donnybrook. The bed linen is all from Brown Thomas.

The bedside lamps in the guest bedroom were ‘cheap as chips’ and came from Hickey’s Home Focus shop in Carrickmines. The gold cherub adds some opulence to the room sitting on one of the bedside lockers from Minnie Peters. The quilt is from Greg Kinsella of Bray Curtains and Fabrics.

The simple white painted bedroom furniture in Suzanne’s son’s room all came from a shop called Reverie which was in Glasthule. Suzanne adapted the chest of drawers by placing family snaps behind the glass panels.

The inspiration for the décor in Suzanne’s daughter’s bedroom came from the magnificent tassels which hang from the four poster bed. Suzanne found these Eastern looking tassels at a Christmas Fair in Leopardstown Race Course.
