Caroline Allen discovers Top Trends for 2011

House and Home sent our design detective, Caroline Allen, to 100% Design in London to see what will be hot and happening in interiors next year.

1. Wallpaper on a roll

Wallpaper is continuing to make a comeback with a range of options at the show including PaperBoy’s desirable dinosaur designs for boys (€99 a roll, available through Garrendenny Lane) and MEYSTYLE’s ‘Nina’ LED looks (£160 to £190 stg per sq m, contact MEYSTYLE ). Inspired by their late grandmother’s embroidery designs, London-based Maria and Ekaterina Yaschuk integrated traditional craft materials with Swarovski crystals and LEDs into the collection which incorporates 18 designs. There was also modular wallpaper from Latvian company, ZNAK Created with a special perforation, pieces can be torn off to create unique spaces.

2. Lighting up

Staying in may be the new going out, but who says we can’t dress up our living spaces with some girlie glamour? Penelope Batley introduced ‘Light Humour’ with her ‘Big Bling’ necklace  and earring lights (pendants from £380, necklaces from £850, all handmade to order in ceramic and blown glass, using low energy bulbs)

3. Winning wood

Teak-tough kitchen sinks, baths, shower grids and tiles were showcased by Devon company William Garvey. The ‘Cheaney Chair’ by Alexena Cayless, (£849.00)  made a style statement in beech, tweed and shoe leather. French company WIP Mobilier fused wood and zesty hues to create sleek kitchen and living room kit. The eyegrabbing Dandelion stool by Design K contains a flower head of pure relief, situated on stalks of moulded plywood. Its mushroomed bud has removable covers. Shining brightly was Macmaster’s ‘Iris’ pendant light in American black walnut (available in a range of wood veneers, handmade to order £375).

4.  Heart felt

Intricately cut felt surfaces and homewares from Selina Rose included rugs, throws, screens and cushions. Felt also featured in eco friendly wallflowers; a large leaf laser cut cushion; and a ruffle cushion by Lorna Syson Textiles, Sculptural bespoke acoustic wall panels by Anne Kyyro Quinn, used felt as the main material.

5. Luxe leather

Leather was looking good in many forms. There were opulent floor and wall tiles from Nextep Leathers including damask designs, and rugs from Jacaranda Carpets.

Treat for feet: Jacaranda Carpets

Treat for feet: Jacaranda Carpets offer a selection of stock leather rugs as well as bespoke designs. The leather – LT566 white/cream design is from the bespoke collection. Take a seat: The nature-inspired Dandelion stool by Design K (www.designk.co.uk) is available in yellow, red, blue, light grey and green.

Flower power: 'Iris'

Flower power: The iris-inspired leaves of Macmaster Design’s handmade to order ‘Iris’ light are elegantly curved at three sets of angles and distanced to product a perfectly proportioned pendant feature, £375, www.macmasterdesign.com

Box of tricks: Earring lights

Box of tricks: Earring lights by Penelope Batley which arose from a play on words 'chandelier earrings'. “Lighting is often referred to the jewellery for the home or the final touches that make it glamorous and homely,” says Penelope. “These are all ideas I was playing with, to create lighting that had personality and humour.” The earring lights can be hung at any height, in a cluster or on their own. Soft landing: The ‘Cheaney chair’
