What is it?

Desert Cave Hotel, Australia; This hotel offers guests a unique experience with shops, bars and rooms all dug out underground in the opal mining village of Coober Pedy in the outback.

What’s so special?

You will literally be ‘going underground’, with previous guests saying it’s the best night’s sleep they’ve ever had! The rooms are cool, dark and airy with spacious ceilings and walls made from sandstone. There is also an underground shopping arcade and a bar and restaurant. For those who may feel too claustrophobic in such surroundings, there are also rooms available above the surface.

Prices in rooms underground start at $225 (€173) and there are various tours available from the hotel, including the Desert Cave Tour and a tour of the surrounding outback.

Getting there:

You can fly with Qantas Airlines from Dublin to Adelaide, with prices starting at €850, and then fly from there direct to Coober Pedy. There is also a coach service to Coober Pedy from Adelaide.
