  Best Design Tips

Limited space means having a good storage plan during the building stage. This is the best time to decide were to put your books and CD's. In this space, two long shelves run the length of each room, and serve a secondary function of uniting the two spaces.

Keep wires out of sight, try sourcing gadgets which hide them. Roches Stores have handy wire hoses, these hold up to three wires neatly behind your television. If you have some spare cash, you could always take the option of a Plasma screen television as the owner of this apartment did.

The bedroom normally houses the wardrobes, however, if you are limited in space, and you have an extra room laying idle, why not transform the room into a walk-in wardrobe complete with wall-to-wall mirrors, every girls fantasy, somewhere to house her shoes!

If you are unable to get the real thing, why not source aa reproduction, the owner of this apartment sourced reproduction period taps from Ideal Bathrooms for the bath which was salvaged from Goodwoods of cork.

Room By Room

The Galley Kitchen

The kitchen is a tiny galley kitchen that opens out onto a sunny roof garden. Blocking up a window meant another wall space could be used. The opposite wall has full length storage cupboard. Pull-down and pull-out storage maximised the available space, while a built in dishwasher minimised the need for dish stacking and draining, also cutting down on clutter.

The two rooms, with their generous proportions and high ceilings work wonderfully as they were originally designed and as a double space with a minimal amount of solid free-standing furniture. Built in cupboards were removed, clothing storage was placed into another room. The whole apartment is open plan giving a wonderful feeling of spaciousness enhanced by panoramic views.

The Bath

Reproduction period taps from Ideal Bathrooms are used on a salvaged bath and sink from Goodwoods of Cork. The black bathroom chair was inherited from the apartment’s previous owner and the cushion upholstered to match the bedspread in screen-printed velvet commissioned from Vicky Richards in London. A mirror panel on the bath lightens the square solidity of the bath and provides interest.

The Study
Sun pours in through the large window in the main room all day; the double doors to the bedroom means the whole space in sunny. The white walls, carpet and sofa make for a cool, elegant scheme against which the artwork and carefully selected pieces of favourite furniture are displayed to full advantage; the elegant Moorish cabinet was inherited; the abstract prints are by Brian Kennedy; a generous dining table in a sunny spot doubles as a worktable for the designer owner.
