Happy Home: why decorating with pink is great for your mood

There’s a good reason why home sports teams often paint the opponent’s dressing room pink – it dilutes aggression and soothes tempers. The statement it makes is uttered in girlish giggles, rather than gruff tones. Hot pinks, however, are nature’s way of upping the ante. As well as being the hue of choice for little girls’ rooms, hot pink creates a sassy party atmosphere and amazingly, it works brilliantly with bright red.

Try the Emmie rug (€5 from Ikea, www.ikea.ie), pink tiffin box, (€16, from Marks and Spencer, www.marksandspencer.com), adopt a pick ‘n’ mix approach to chairs (an assortment of plastic chairs in reds and pinks is now available from both Ikea and TK Maxx) and add mix ‘n’ match chinese lanterns from your local hardware shop.  For hot pink paint, try Claret from Colourtrend.
