The Great Escape!

By Kay Kinsella 07-04-2011

The best memories from childhood are always from those fun outdoor adventures, not sitting in looking at a television or a Nintendo DS screen! That’s why Caitriona Walsh set up ‘Little Green Fingers’, Ireland's first child minding service that does all its activities outdoors. This simple but novel idea has seen the service being awarded the Early Childhood Ireland Innovation Award.

Little Green Fingers help to develop the children's literacy and numeracy games, such as 'number treasure hunts', telling stories and rhyme exercises and does it all outside. They use a Dutch delivery bicycle to transport the children to the beach, woods, or on excursions, where they sing and discuss the open-air surroundings. The children are kept comfortable with special waterproof clothing so the weather can’t ruin the fun, while special cameras help them to document their outdoor adventures, come rain or shine. So if you’re beginning to think your little one is looking at little square around the eyes, take a leaf out of Little Green Finger’s book and get them outside!

The award will be presented to the business in the Royal Kilmainham Hospital from 6.30 to 8.00 pm this Saturday, April 8th. For more information please phone Caitriona at 086 382 2751 or visit www.littlegreenfingers.me
