IKEA's new collection reimagines some of their classics - and it's limited edition

Some of IKEA's vintage pieces are sought-after items at auctions, but their new collection may allow you get your hands on similar furniture without hunting them down.

IKEA is 75 years in business this year, and to celebrate they're reimagining some of their classics. Some of their golden oldies will be back, and IKEA are encouraging all and any nostalgia for the modern makeover of their hand-selected favourites from the 50-60s (out now), 70-80s (out October) and the 90-00s (out December). Expect dark woods with a classic expression, playful pieces with strong colours, and more minimal choices with natural light woods and graphic colours.

Clotilde Passalacqua from IKEA UK and Ireland says: “The new “Re-imagined Classics” collection is to be kept and looked after in the home forever. The products within the collection were favourites when they were first introduced and IKEA is showing that these designs are still current now, decades after they were first created. IKEA is always looking for inspiration in its design history and is now showing how its iconic products can withstand the test of time and fit perfectly in everyday life at home in the modern world.”

First up, available in store now, is the 50-60s remakes, focussing on a time that brought about some of IKEA's very first IKEA products. Highlights from this era include a new look LÖVBACKEN table (previously known as LÖVET) - the first ever flat-pack product from the Swedish giant, and a modern take on the GANGET armchair, which was in the first ever IKEA store at opening.

From the 70-80s era, IKEA are reminiscing with a smile on their faces. A bold, colourful, fun take on the pieces, the stars of the October launch are the new accessories for the KLIPPAN sofa. It's a tribute to the Memphis group, a big trend for 2018, with new quilted covers and beautifully designed legs for the iconic affordable sofa. The new covers will come in a bright yellow, fiery red, and a cool cobalt blue.

Finally in December the last instalment of the Reimagining Classics collection will land, centring around the 90-00s period. Simple and minimal, it mixes untreated blonde Scandi woods with graphic patterns. The first PS collection came in 1995, and this time around, we're seeing a remake of the PS bench - sleek design with a good dose of functionality thanks to the hidden storage.

These contemporary takes seem like they fit right in with IKEA's current offering, so though they're vintage inspired, we can imagine them slotting right into modern houses.
