8 spotlight grabbing lamps that force you to notice them

By Anna Shelswell-White 30-03-2017

There's so much fun to be had with modern lighting today. Whether you want it to do its job and hide modestly in the background, or really grab the eye, becoming an artwork in itself, there are tonnes of ways to dress up the humble lightbulb. We chose to go all out, today, so here's just eight of our favourites – and yes, they're total attention seekers.

1. Light and Airy

Intricate and see-through, these lamps by MOOI are just what this space needs. Why chop up a beautifully-lit open plan space with a blocked form? Genius.

2. Wet Wet Wet

The movement and transparency of the Big Bubble makes us think they're going to pop at a moment's notice.

3. White on Black

Perfect for a room with high ceilings and a predominantly monotone palette, this ceiling light rivals at the impressive artwork in this chic apartment. And we'll take the parquet flooring as well, please.

4. My Fair Lady

A total classic, the Vertigo lamp reminds us of a summer hat, à la Eliza Doolittle, sprawled across the ceiling.

5. Fold It

Recycled materials like cardboard and plywood can make the most beautiful forms. And, foldable furniture and lighting is becoming more popular than ever. Especially in Scandinavia.

6. The Awesome Outdoors

These have been on our lust list for quite some time now. As if Anglepoise lamps weren't stylish and statement-making enough, how about one mahoosive one in the back garden?

7. Colour Pop

Nod to mid-century modern and add a large lamp in a small room. It will definitely make an impact without taking up any precious floor space.

8. Industrial Movement

Clever move to offset the steel oven and cooker hood with industrial ceiling lights. Pardon the overused quote (and yes, we know it's not a rug), but it really does pull the room together
