IKEA’s Back to Nature Kitchen of the future

By Jimmy Loughran 18-08-2010

Back to Nature - Sustainable design and energy efficiency come to life in back to nature kitchen where the garden is brought inside, allowing us to grow our own food and become more self sufficient

Perhaps you've already read about the fantastic IKEA event that took place in the Barbican - but have you seen some of the fascinating kitchen of the future ideas that Future Laboratories have come up with? Future Laboratory gave us some example of what 2040 kitchens may look like, one of which was an idea of going 'Back to Nature' in the home - as seen in the ELEMENTRA example above..

The report claims that in the future we'll enter an era called 'Nu thrift', in which issues surrounding waste and food packaging will become important ethical issues.

This will result in a greener kitchen - through gardening, recycling and upcycling (converting and incorporating old and useless items to have a streamlined function in the home).

Supposedly, gardens and mini-allotments will be the norm in 2040 - and we'll all be growing-our-own food out of necessity as well as a sense of moral obligation.

An interesting device referenced in the description for this kitchen is Hyundai's kitchen nano garden - a fridge that allows food growth as well as storage!
Another invention mentioned is Florent Coirier's Kusamono, a horticultural light that helps plants live longer - which will supposedly be handy for those trying to cultivate in dark or cramped spaces.

Do you think that this concept of the future kitchen is plausible? Will everyone be growing their own fruit and veg on their rooftops and out their windows by 2040?

Can you imagine some of the world's major cities, say New York, shrouded in green shrubs - and if so, is this an future you look forward to? Tell us in the comments!
