9 talks you can't miss at our Interiors & Design Theatre at the Ideal Home Show

By Aoife Valentine Secor 19-10-2018

Every year, we look forward to meeting tonnes of you at the Ideal Home Show at the RDS, and this year is no different. You'll find our stand in the Colourtrend Design Forum, where we'll have a special offer on our newest magazine, the November/December issue, but that's not all!

This year, House and Home magazine’s editorial director Kirstie McDermott will be hosting the House and Home Interiors & Design Theatre, and you're not going to believe the incredible line-up of talks we've got for you across the bank holiday weekend.

Covering home makeovers, interior design trends and décor, new home design and build, extending your home, colour choices, lighting, upcycling, home storage, home renovation top tips, financing your home build or purchase and much more, there's going to be something for you no matter what stage you're at with your home.

We're sure there's plenty on the schedule that appeals, but with 20 Theatre talks across the weekend and an incredible line-up you'll want to check out throughout the Ideal Home Show, we've narrowed it down to nine sessions we think you absolutely can't miss. Jot 'em down in your diaries now!

Friday, 1.40pm: 'Feel the colour fear - and do it anyway!', with Emma Edmonds

As we're always located in the Colourtrend Design Forum, you better believe we've got a strong interest in colour. But we know it's one area people always find intimidating - with so many colours to choose from, where do you start? And how do you avoid going too far? Stillorgan Decor's Colour Consultant Emma Edmonds will be chatting to us about feeling the colour fear, and doing it anyway. If you've been admiring beautiful interior colour schemes online (or in our latest issue!), but are afraid it will seem OTT in a 'regular' home, this is the talk you need to hear. There are ways and means, people!

Friday, 3.40pm: 'Unlocking the secrets of great interior design', with North Design

Lauren Martin and Louise Rankin, the gals behind North Design, know a thing or two about interior design. They recently offered us up some advice on making the details count in your home, and on the Friday, they'll be spilling some of their best kept secrets when it comes to designing your home. Pick up some excellent tips and tricks on how to put your home together the way the experts would, from the Dublin-based design duo.

Saturday, 12.20pm: 'Daring to be dark', with Colourtrend Colour Consultant Orla Kelly

We are into dark interiors in a big way, and we're not the only ones. The world's been going increasingly crazy for dark decor but it can be hard to know where to start, especially if your home has previously been all brightness and light. Colourtrend's expert Colour Consultant Orla Kelly will be on hand to chat to us about daring to be dark - where to begin and how to achieve the look without going overboard.

Saturday, 2.20pm: 'How to plan a dream room scheme', with Jill L'Estrange

Interior designers put a lot of thought into room schemes, and finding the perfect set-up to fit both the room and how you want to use it. Architect and interior designer Jill L'Estrange, founder of L'Estrange Designs, will be giving us some insider tips and tricks on getting the absolute best from your space when you're setting it up from scratch.

Saturday, 4.45pm: 'My ex-council house renovation journey' with Suzie Kenny from The House Beyond The Palms

If you haven't picked up our newest November/December issue, you can nab it at the Ideal Home Show for a bargain price, and in it, you'll find a gorgeous real home tour of Suzie Kenny from The House Beyond The Palms' home. If you follow her online, you might already have a taste of just how gorgeous her house is, and you'd never guess it's an ex-council house she renovated. She's going to be telling us allllll about it, and we're sure you'll pick up plenty of tips and tricks along the way.

Saturday and Sunday, 1.20pm: 'First time buyers: getting on the property ladder' with QS Patricia Power and Niamh Donnelly from permanent tsb

We know how hard it can be to get on the property ladder, and that most people will take any tips they can get. In fact, this stuff is so valuable, we're running it twice over the weekend, so you've no excuse to miss it. Quantity surveyor Patricia Power, and permanent tsb's Niamh Donnelly will be taking to the stage to offer their insider insights into finding your foothold on that all important ladder. If you're a first time buyer, you're going to want to push this to the top of your list.

Sunday, 4.10pm: 'Less stuff, more space' with Roisin Murphy, Presenter of RTE's Home Rescue

You'll probably recognise Roisin Murphy as the presenter of RTE's Home Rescue, formerly known as Desperate Houses, and if you've seen the show, you'll know Roisin has plenty of insight to offer. She's chatting to us a few times over the weekend - on Friday about home dreams, and on Saturday and Monday about the design & inspiration for The Cúl Art House, but we're highlighting her talk on decluttering on Sunday because there's likely not a home in the country that couldn't do with a little Marie Kondo mentality. Pick up tips on living with less and making more space in your home, and come away feeling smugly part of the minimalist movement.

Monday, 1.00pm: 'My period house renovation journey', with Darren Heaney from Old Victorian New

Darren Heaney from Old Victorian New's home is famous. Well, famous to us, anyway. His beautiful renovated Victorian villa featured on the cover of our September/October issue (which will be available at our stand at the Show if you missed it!) and his house tour inside was a delight. He's going to be telling us about the journey he went on renovating his home into a magazine cover worthy dream, and all the highs and lows involved along the way. If you're planning your own reno, this will be invaluable for you.

Monday, 2.10pm: 'Stylist secrets to elevate your interior', with stylist Lesiele Juliet

Lesiele Juliet is one of our Ireland's most sought after stylists, and for good reason. She regularly styles up a storm on shoots and real home tours for House and Home and she brings a little bit of magic to all the interiors projects she works on. How you style your home can have a big impact on how your rooms feel, and Lesiele is here to help you achieve whatever look or vibe you're going for, through perfect styling.
