4 interior designers talk winter fabrics

By Jimmy Loughran 08-10-2010

It may just be autumn, but now is a great time to start prepping your home for the winter. Fabrics are a great way of giving a lift to your decorum without spending a fortune. We've written about great places to find fabrics in the past, and we've asked four interior designers to share their thoughts on fabrics - here's what they had to say.

Mairead O’Doherty

Fabrics are rich and sumptuous during winter, think linens, chenilles, and silks. Floral or bold patterns give a modern twist, while checks, tartans and stripes are also in fashion. Achieve the look without breaking the bank, use trimmings on plain curtains and cushions to add detail and luxury. Colours on trend for this season are: teal, petrol, green, midnight blue, plum and aubergine.

Winter is a time to feel cosy and to surround yourself in tactile, soft fabrics. Gentle, old fashioned velvets in muted, earthy tones that elude a “lived-in” feel are a must have. Vintage mustard, occasionally splashed against a palette of earthy khaki or warm greys is my choice for winter trendy colours. The Kobe Scala range is a perfect example, the price too is a welcome winter surprise.

Velvets are a personal favourite of mine, they add that bit of liveable luxury, they mix well with other fabrics, and reflect light, so no matter what colour you choose they will look different each time of day. Create a beautiful addition to your home by introducing velvets this winter.

One of the biggest neutral colours this season is grey. It’s great for carpets and paint colours moving away from beiges and creams. You can brighten it up with accent colours of pink, aubergines or yellows.
