A House and Home promotion

It's rare that furniture shopping isn't centred around some sort of investment piece - whether you're on a budget or are looking to splurge, most people want a decent piece that will stand the test of time in their home. With that in mind, we chatted to our Partner of the Month, M Kelly Interiors, about the top tips you need to know when furniture shopping, and their big picks for furniture trends for the coming season.

What are your top five tips when it comes to furniture shopping?

1. Bring in your sizes and measurements, as it makes it a lot easier to get a better idea of what will be suitable for your home, and the price range you should be looking at.

2. Before you arrive, consider what colour choice you might want - whether that's a specific shade of wood, or a particular colour fabric. Have a good idea of what the colour scheme you're aiming to create in a room is.

3. Come in with an open mind regarding the choice of product and allow the salesperson to direct you. They have years of experience and sometimes the scheme or piece of furniture might not work or be suitable for the space its going into.

4. Don't be shy! If you've got questions, ask the salespeople - no question is too big or too small. You need to make sure this is the perfect piece for your home, so don't leave anything unanswered before you buy.

5. It's a simple one, but one that is easier said than done with our busy lives. Allow yourself plenty of time to shop around and don't be rushed or under pressure. There is nothing worse than ordering in a rush and making a mistake.

What are the big furniture trends you're predicting for the coming season?

We find at the moment that interior trends are veering towards contemporary living with space at a premium, in most new builds simple design grey is the base colour still and jazzing up the space with strong vibrant colours such as rusts ,yellows, deep greens and navy being  the most popular to bring more life to the  grey base colours.

Our buyers at the recent international trade fairs, namely Maison De Objet in Paris and Cologne in Germany, noticed that most of the designers involved with the large manufactures are introducing lots of colour into their ranges eg. they would have a grey couch with mustard designed colours or a navy couch with deep green velvet cushions so luxury and comfort  is back.

Grey has been around for a number of years but customers want more than the bland, simple, clean-cut grey - they want something natural, with some warmth in it.

As regards flooring the in-colour is washed oak with several choices available to clients from reasonable 8m to 12m laminate to the engineered semi solid oak - within that, there is something for everybody’s price bracket. When it comes to carpets for many years now we have veered away from large multi coloured designed carpets and gone towards plain luxury deep piled, cleanable carpets with usually a stripe available to match the plain version. We are in a disposable age with prices of flooring actually gone down, most clients change flooring at much more regular intervals, and wool has got too expensive, hence the use of synthetic carpets. It's much more cost effective.
