House of the week: Tipp top townhouse

What is it?

Number 10 O’Connell Terrace is located in the heart of Clonmel, Co. Tipperary

The Spec

While the outside this mid terrace townhouse appears to be nothing out of the ordinary, the interior of this two bedroom property tells a different story. It's clear to see that this house has been renovated to the highest standard, with special care and attention to maintain its original charm. The accomodation is made up of a fabulous light-filled hallway, ample sized sitting room complete with a cast-iron period fireplace and large bathroom featuring a claw foot bath. The living room has a solid-fuel stove and leads onto the open plan kitchen/ diner extension with fitted country style units. Upstairs is made up of two bedrooms and a second bathroom. The south- west facing yard houses a workshop and large garden.

Why we love it?

We love how the house has been carefully restored, making sure the period feel remains. Original features such as the fireplaces and panelled windows have been cleaned and enhanced while the addition of the coving, ceiling roses  and claw bathtub all manage to keep the house's chocolate box charm. The use of limestone tiles throughout the ground floor of the house gives a continous physical and visual flow going from one room to the next.

Steal the style…

Be clever when decorating in smaller spaces such as this hallway. The aim is to keep walls and floors pale to keep the space looking bright and airy. Creating a focal point in your hallway can create a homely feel - here a white cover cleverly disguises what would be a boring radiator and also makes for a pefect base for a featured ornament. Simply replacing your front door with a panelled glass style (like the one above) can work wonders in maximising natural light.
