Designer reinvents her Victorian house

By Jimmy Loughran 09-08-2010

Interior designer Sian Clendennan and her husband Geoff worked hard to resurrect a Victorian terraced house that had been chopped up into dingy flats. They renovated it in stages, and, after the birth of baby Lucas, topped off the dramatic revamp with a light-filled extension.

Now it’s a beautiful period family home that manages to be both classy and child-friendly, thanks to Sian’s skills as an interior designer. We got a chance to take a wander around this gorgeous home and chat with Sian about the makeover....

Hall:

Entering Sian's home, you are immediately greeted by this gorgeous hallway with neutral colour scheme and beautiful Victorian detailing...

These leather and steel chairs and walnut sideboard are from the Bert Plantagie collection, available from Interior Image.

Living room:

We wanted to make this an adult space. It’s like a reading room, a chill out room...

TV room:

The downstairs TV room downstairs adjoining the kitchen is really cost, with its super large sofas.

Dining room:

I went a bit crazy on the fabric for the blinds in the extension, it’s a silk embroidered fabric, but since they’re blinds they don’t actually need that much fabric.

Kitchen:

This kitchen is a perfect marriage of modern clean lines and a muted colour palette, and is by Arrital Cucine from Dee Design.

Master bedroom:

At the top of the house there was a very large room that we wanted to use as a bedroom, and we also wanted the modern convenience of an en suite bathroom, but we didn’t want to split the room in two like a bad B&B, so we put a two metre high partition in the room and on the back of one side we put a slick contemporary double sink vanity unit and being that again an oversized walk in shower.

The shower is made from carrera marble. The space is very hotel-like, I always think that when you go to hotels you get such lovely rooms. It’s more a suite than a bedroom and that’s the feel we were trying to achieve

Guest bedroom:

I used a lot of different textures in this room - silks, velvets, linen, cotton, wool, glass and steel - to create a very sumptuous feel.
