Seven simple tips for a serene bedroom

By Jimmy Loughran 14-02-2011

The bedroom is arguably the most important room in the house - so it's important that it serves a space to retreat and chill out. Read these seven simple tips and turn your bedroom into your own personal relaxation space.

  1. To create a peaceful sleeping space keep the room simple. Reduce furniture to the bare minimum, adopt a cohesive colour scheme; and rely on space, light and texture to create a sensory haven.
  2. White is the ideal colour for the peaceful bedroom. Representing cleanliness and calm, it is also cool and contemporary. Opting for an all white bedroom does not, however, mean you must sleep in a stark monastic cube. Instead add texture and warmth with a mixture of textiles and rugs as in this romantic all white bedroom from Laura Ashley.
  3. Pale green, like this L0.05.75 from Crown, is perfect for peaceful sleeping. Mixed with white detailing and timber floors it is a good option for the bedroom.
  4. Keep your window treatments simple like these white voile floor length curtains available from Homefocus at Hickeys. Alternatively choose lined tab top curtains on a simple curtain pole or timber slatted blinds, both of which will work well in the bedroom.
  5. If possible try to ensure that the room you sleep in faces east. This way you will benefit from the morning sun.
  6. Choose unashamedly luxurious fabrics, including linens and silks.
  7. Despite what you may have heard pale blue can be very calming and not cold in a bedroom, particularly when mixed with crisp white bedlinen. To recreate the blue in this room try Crown S0.20.70
