Astonishingly a third of our lives are spent sleeping. Therefore choosing a mattress is an intrinsic part of revamping your bedroom. Here's House and Home's top tips for finding the perfect mattress.
COMFORT: Gone are the days when we suffered restless nights on a hard-as-a-board mattress believing the myth that it’s better for you. Now experts believe you’ll sleep better when you’re cradled in comfort. The combination of cushioning materials and extra-soft surface treatments in top-quality mattresses create a more comfortable feel thus affording you a more relaxing night’s sleep.
SUPPORT: The mattress needs to contour to certain parts of your body – like your hips and shoulders – and support others such as your lower back. Then depending on what position you usually fall asleep in plus your height and weight there will be a mattress with the right firmness for your body. It’s normal to feel self-conscious whilst trying out a bed in a shop but the only way to get an idea of whether the mattress is right for you is to lie on it, in your normal sleeping pattern, for at least five minutes.
DURABILITY: The best assurance of good performance over a number of years is to buy the highest quality mattress you can afford. Regardless of the guarantee your mattress will lose its ability to offer a good night’s sleep after a while. It’s also recommended you turn it twice a year and replace it after ten years.
SPACE: Cramped quarters can turn sleeping into a nightly wrestling match. If you share your bed with a partner, be sure to select queen or king size. Both are not only wider, but several inches longer than the standard double, which offers each sleeper more freedom of motion while sleeping. Always check which type of mattress goes best with the bed you plan to buy, as some are more suitable for certain styles and frames than others.
