Nikki Walsh chatted with Interior Designer, Geri Designs about the project:
1 The Brief
To transform a childhood home into a comfortable holiday home for the client’s children and grandchildren to enjoy, with large communal areas and plenty of places to sit and linger.
Comfort was key: a generous L-shaped sofa ensured the living area could seat as many people as possible, while island stools were forsaken for a drop-down banquette with an upholstered back so guests could linger.
All upholstery and curtains were made to order.
2 The Challenge
Getting the details done as soon as possible. Geri made sure there was what she refers to as a “hero’s moment” in every room, with handmade tiles in the kitchen and a bespoke limestone fireplace in the open plan living area.
The project was in Co Clare, so sourcing specialists to do specific tasks wasn’t always easy.
3 The Décor
Natural materials, such as stone and timber, were used throughout, complementing the interior’s earthy colour palette. Antiques were scattered throughout. “The client,” she says, “loves a mix of old and new.”
Geri’s tips for adding comfort to your home
- Layered Textiles: One of the simplest yet most impactful ways to introduce comfort is through the careful layering of textures - this is my favourite way to make a space have soul. Think sumptuous throws, soft cushions and tactile rugs that invite you to sink in and relax. Fabrics like linen, velvet and cashmere elevate the aesthetic and create an immediate sense of warmth and luxury.
