Pops of colour can add a lot of personality to a room, without going over the top.

You don't have go too bold if that's not your style. No matter your comfort level with more daring decor, it's possible to introduce pops of colour into any space. This is the easiest, most entry-level move towards more colourful decor as you can go as big or small as you like, and none of your additions need to be permanent. Choose something like a colourful lamp to make a bold statement, or opt for smaller pieces like vases or candleholders if you're not so sure.

Plants, plants, and more plants

We're only wild about more greenery in all rooms at House and Home, but a plant or colourful floral arrangement can make such a big, and at the same time, subtle, impact in a room. They add an organic element to a space, literally breathing some life into the room, as well as bringing vibrant hues, so they're a win-win in our book.

Choose a single statement piece

Add colour in one fell swoop by concentrating your pop of colour to one piece of furniture. A bright or boldly hued chair is probably the easiest option, and while it will be an attention grabber, you can choose a hue that ties in nicely with the room's other elements.

Bring in a colourful rug

Colourful patterns or details on a rug will bring together a space nicely, adding colour from the ground up, without taking over. Using a colourful runner is also an option in more unexpected places like the kitchen, where it will also add dimension to the space.

Stick to one or two accent hues

Sticking to one or two hues, brought in through accents and accessories, will stop you getting carried away, and will stop the space from becoming disconnected and harsh. Layer your colours with your chosen neutrals so your colours don't accidentally overwhelm the space.

Pick colourful textiles

Throws and cushions are a good way to bring in colour and inject personality to a space. A single patterned or coloured throw can make a real statement in a neutral space, and in the right room, can totally chance the tone of the room with a simple pop of colour through a blanket, without having to redecorate entirely.

Start with soft hues

If you're stuck in your neutral ways and not sure if colour is for you, that's totally fine! But if you're interested in adding some pops of colours and aren't sure if you're ready to make the jump, sticking to soft hues like peaches, mints, blushes, pale yellows and the likes, will help you work in colour in small doses, and slowly. These soft colours will add a different perspective your space, without being a leap too far. Faded rugs, textiles and accessories can also be a gentle introduction if you'd like stronger hues than pastels but don't want to make the commitment just yet.
