Online extra: Trudi Doyle's farmhouse in Ballyconnell

In our September/October issue we take a look inside Trudi Doyle's farmhouse.

Muted florals, flea market finds and colourful paintings bring bold charm to an old-world farmhouse.

You can always trust an artist to know a good blank canvas when they see it. When the painter Trudi Doyle stumbled across a dilapidated farmhouse two decades ago, she instantly recognised it as her dream home – if only in her creative mind’s eye.

The sitting room badly needed a new floor, and again, its fireplace was smothered by boarding.

I opened it all up and had a mantelpiece custom made to suit it - says Trudi.

The house hadn’t been lived in for two years and had no water and no heating.  It was literally four walls and a roof. But I always dreamt of living in an old farmhouse with my own studio.

It’s a perfect back drop for me to display my paintings, which are often very colourful and vibrant.

The kitchen was dark and damp, with a clay floor, a solitary window and a solid panelled back door.  Trudi added a window in the back wall and replaced the original door panels with glass.

Upstairs, the bathroom has been furnished with salvage yard finds and tiled in plain white.

You can find the rest of Trudi's home on page 49 of the September/October issue of House and Home, which is in shops nationwide.
