Time it took Five weeks, from start to finish
The original L-shaped kitchen, in this detached house, simply wasn’t working in terms of layout and functionality for these homeowners in Co Wicklow. Recommended by a friend, they called on Rathnew-based kitchen designers, Noel Dempsey Design, to completely reconfigure the space. “They loved the simplicity of our Hamptons Collection and the quality of the internal joinery,” says David of Noel Dempsey Design.
As is standard in many homes, the kitchen was the busiest room in the house. However, it was also the coldest. “The lack of insulation was the main reason for this, so improving this element was a priority,” says David. To remedy the cold, the internal walls were fitted with insulating plasterboard.
Moving away from the L-shaped design meant that the windows and doors were also open to reconfiguration. “A new opening was made for the French doors, where the old kitchen window was,” continues David. “The doors now connect the kitchen to the beautiful landscaped gardens.” Interestingly, these French doors were decided on after the designers presented their 3D drawings to the homeowners.
The kitchen cabinets, as part of the Hamptons Collection, are handmade from a solid hardwood with a natural oak interior and a hand painted exterior finish. “Instead of the standard ‘L’ shape design, I went for blocks of storage on the main wall, island and pantry side, and kept the most-used items, like the fridge and oven, on the same side,” explains David.
The results speak for themselves; this once cold and dysfunctional hub of the home has benefitted from clever reconfiguration.
